Simultaneous determinations of hemoglobin A1c and fasting blood sugar in a group medical examination *

In a group medical examination of 856 residents in H town in Okayama, hemoglobin A1C(HbA1C)and fasting blood sugar(FBS)were determined simultaneously. Results were evaluated using the JDS(Japan Diabetes Society)criteria for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus based on FBS levels, which regard1) more than 110 mg/dl as borderline diabetic and2) more than 126 mg/dl as diabetic. Consequently, 50% of the residents with HbA1C of more than 5.8% were borderline diabetics and 20% were diabetics. All of the residents with HbA1C of more than 6.5% belonged to the borderline group and 80% of them belonged to the diabetic group. All of those with an HbA1C level over 6.9% were diabetics. It is worth noting that among the participating residents over 40 years old, HbA1C and FBS increased significantly with increasing age.
