Smoking interventions for hospitalized patients *
A survey of smoking and the health of hospitalized patients at Kawasaki Medical School Hospital was carried out. Eighty-nine (60 men and 29 women) out of 117 patients (76.1%) responded to the survey questionnaire. In the sample surveyed, 17 patients (15 men and 2 women) were smokers. The prevalence of smoking was 25-9% among male patients and 6.9% among female patients. Smoking interventions were provided to these 17 smokers. Although seven patients stopped smoking during hospitalization, three relapsed after discharge. The smoking cessation rate at a six-month follow-up was 23.5%. It is suggested that both a smoking cessation program and relapse-prevention efforts after discharge are needed for hospital patients.
