Characteristics of outpatients with abdominal symptoms and functional dyspepsia in the primary-care unit of Kawasaki Medical School Hospital. *

To clarify the clinical characteristics of outpatients with abdominal symptoms in the primary care unit, we investigated all outpatients (n = 7,250) treated in the primary care unit between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2011. We enrolled 1,184 patients with abdominal symptoms in the present study. Of the 136 patients who had undergone endoscopic examination, 30 patients with organic disease were excluded. Of the remaining 106 patients, only 15 were finally diagnosed with functional dyspepsia (FD) according to Rome III criteria. The ratio of FD patients diagnosed using Rome III criteria was lower in the primary care unit than in the gastroenterology unit of Kawasaki Medical School Hospital. (Accepted on March 17, 2012)
