Reducing Effect of Steroids on Fragility of Human Erythrocytes Detected by a Prompt Hemolysis Test

Steroids reduced the fragility of human eythrocytes. Progesterone was so far the most effective (1.25×10-5~1.0×10-4M). This can be detected by a prompt hemolysis test, but not by the currently-used hemolysis test (Sanford method). (14C) progesterone can be easily uptaken and released by the erythrocyte membrane. Discocytes were transformed into stomatocytes and spherocytes by the addition of progesterone (5×10-5 M~2×10-4M).
