Results of the outpatient at Kawasaki Medical Hospital Department of General Medicine in 2008-2009 *

It has been two years since the Department of General Medicine was restarted under a new system. The performance of the Department during those two years is summarized in this paper. The total numbers of patients seen was 3,411 in 2008 and 3,909 in 2009. The numbers of people receiving vaccination was 1,340 in 2008 and 213 in 2009. Regarding the initial diagnosis of the patients seen in 2009, there were patients with serious diseases such as myocardial infarction or various malignancies, whereas 43% had influenza and cold-like diseases. The ability to differentiate the highly serious diseases from so-called common diseases is an important technique of physical examination. We want our medical school students and residents to acquire this ability. (Accepted on February 3, 2010)
