Phlebosclerotic colitis diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy: a report of tow cases and a review of the literature *
Phlebosclerotic colitis is a rare ischemic disorder of the colon associated with phlebosclerosis of the mesenteric vein. We here report two cases of phlebosclerotic colitis in a 59-year-old Japanese female and a 77-year-old Japanese female. In both cases, abdominal computed tomography revealed linear calcifications around the ascending colon, and colonoscopy disclosed dark-colored mucosa with scattered small ulcers. Circumferential collagen deposition around the capillaries of the lamina propria was noted on endoscopic biopsy. The salient pathological and clinical features of phlebosclerotic colitis are discussed along with a review of the literature. (Accepted on November 28, 2008)
